Are We Wedded to Sin?

Prayer and careful study is the key to understanding the Bible

It’s been a while so I decided to reread the Bible from cover to cover. As part of this endeavor, I am going to post some of my thoughts and questions along the way.

My first question comes out of Genesis 4:

“If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. It’s desire is for you, but you must rule over it.” (Genesis 4:7, ESV)

Why does God use the same verbiage when describing sin’s relationship with Cain (us) as He does when describing a woman’s relationship with her husband (c.f. 3:16)? Are we, essentially, wedded to sin?

  1. Hi Christopher,

The short answer is probably found in Romans Chp.8 – especially verse 7.
I am not a supporter of original sin – that we are born in sin – we appear to learn sin from others, ‘go with the flow’ in other words.
Christians appear to be encouraged to distance themselves from the ways of this world.

How many people have considered that: – the ‘natural’ mind of man was not designed to be subject to the law of God – it is something that has to be freely chosen! – History proves and our present societies prove that this is indeed correct.
Perhaps not entirely chosen freely – John 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

A study from Oxford University, concluded that children below the age of five found it easier to believe in some “superhuman” properties than to understand human limitation’.
This is hardly a surprising conclusion as children are taught (by other humans) that their childlike (openness to the invisible) beliefs are generally unacceptable in the society to which they belong. Paradoxically, these same people will willingly subject their children to Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and a host of other quasi-spiritual or occult mysteries. Harry Potter especially has been singled out as popular and wholesome reading material for children

Satan has become a myth to most people, as indeed has God.

Jesus was ‘the stone that the builders rejected’ – his true followers have, in the past, and most probably now and in the future, also been subjected to rejection by those who adhere to the ways of this world – One can not have two masters.

2Corinth.4:18 ” While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal”.

    Regards

    John

    • John, in context, it would seem that Romans 8 tells us that Believers are empowered to not sin. That seems to me to imply that sins remains “crouching at the door” but believers in Christ may “rule over it” via the power of the Holy Spirit. What am I , missing?

      • Christopher, I think it takes a little more than a belief to become empowered to not sin. Even if one has qualified to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit it does not mean that one is henceforth shielded from all sin.
The Holy Spirit is a dynamic force – it has to be used – it would appear that if it is not used then it can very easily be withdrawn.

In brief (actually not so brief as it turned out):

If I was to reduce my explanation to just one word that word would be COMPETITION.

Competition came into this world at the very beginning of mankind’s creation, when the very first creations were given a choice – which fruit was most attractive – they were not forced to choose their Creator’s way, but were given the free will to choose an alternative way of living – which, according to the Scriptures they did. The majority of mankind has chosen the alternative lifestyle right up to the present day.
        Mankind became SELF-conscious!

However, looking at this from another angle we can say that it is really not a competition between our Creator and the Adversary because according to Scripture, as much as has been revealed, the future outcome of mankind’s sojourn on this planet has already been ordained.

Competition is viewed as a positive quality in our modern society – ‘Competition is healthy’ – is a phrase we often hear expressed by politicians and industry leaders.
        Just how healthy is competition?

We are continually bombarded with many apparently valid reasons as to why competition is viewed as a positive asset, when the truth is that competition is a natural force invoked in an effort to curb Man’s GREED – sin?

We all possess this rather unpleasant trait, some less so than others. Greed is a natural part of the make-up of human nature. Human nature, of itself, is not inherently good, as humanists would have us believe. Few of us would admit publicly that we possess this greedy streak, but by taking a brutally honest look at ourselves, it will reveal itself.

The absence of a common set of ‘Standards and Values’ that ALL Mankind will submit to, and follow, promotes a spirit of competition rather than that of cooperation.

National and international assemblies make efforts to implement common sets of standards through laws and charters that are based on the frailties of human nature. The lawgivers try to implement them while the many and varied law firms make a living trying to circumvent them.

Human Nature – What is it?

Let us take a fairly brief look at how our Creator (there are of course many people who do not believe we are created beings) views human nature.
The majority of products that Man creates usually come with an Instruction Book and a guarantee. If the guidelines contained in the book of instructions are followed then the creator of the product guarantees a reasonably productive life-span for the product.

The guarantee does NOT mean that the product will have a problem free life-span, but the creator of the product will endeavour to rectify any problems that may occur within the guarantee period – on condition that the product has been used in accordance with the guidelines set out in the instruction book.

I would suggest that we humans are also supplied with a similar set of instructions and guarantee, and just like the owner of any man-made product; we can freely choose whether or not we adhere to the conditional instructions.

If we do not, then we must be willing to accept the consequences of our choice. The consequences of making the wrong choice are all too apparent in the world we live in.

How can it be that the awesome mind of man is constantly creating new wonders within the realms of science and technology but appears to be totally unable to solve human evils and world problems?

The answer is HUMAN NATURE. This is not my own opinion, but the opinion of our Creator.

Isaiah 55:8 For my thoughts [are] not your thoughts, neither [are] your ways my ways, saith the LORD. 9 For [as] the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

The carnal (human) mind of humans does not, of itself, naturally think as our Creator does.

Jeremiah 17:9 ”The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

Of course, there are many that do not accept that Jesus Christ (Not his correct name, but an English derivation of a Roman/Greek translation!) was The Word in person and that the Holy Bible is The Word in print.

People will also perhaps argue that many verses in The Bible are open to differing interpretations – hence the abundance of many different groups calling themselves Christian, but with differing views on Biblical interpretation. Can they all be right? Can they all be in possession of God’s Holy Spirit if the many and various main stream churches and other so-called Christian ministries found in this world interpret the Word of God differently?

Am I correct in my assertions??

1Cr 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

        Eph.4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

God’s Holy Spirit does not give us assistance in interpreting The WORD as it pleases us or in a way we find most convenient – the Father, the Word and God’s Holy Spirit are as ONE – they are in agreement – Many so-called Christian churches and groups are not in agreement with each other – they teach doctrines that have no basis in God’s Word – they are in competition to attract members!

2 Cr.11:13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

There is clearly more than ONE spirit at work in a number of so-called Christian assemblies.

To be deceived means to honestly and firmly believe in a falsehood (often called facts as a substitute for truth).

Through the ages Man has also created his own god(s) and his own religions.
Many great civilisations have appeared on the world scene and ALL have ultimately failed through false reasoning – Is our present civilization heading the same way?

The originator of the Big Lie or false reasoning was of course Satan, but then he has been relegated to a position of some make-believe fantasy character in this present world-when he actually rules this world – for a TIME. Jesus Christ qualified, in the flesh, to sit on the throne of this world – but as yet has not returned to claim it from the Adversary.

Unfortunately, our Creator is also a part of this fantasy in the minds of many!

        TIME (EMIT)

Let us take a rather large leap of – well let us call it faith!

The mind can assimilate an enormous amount of information, which we store in the brain, but that information – of itself – is of very little use if not acted upon or used in some way.

The physical body can transmit physical knowledge through the five senses to the physical brain, but the physical is not capable of sensing what one might call spiritual or unseen knowledge – new knowledge.

Interestingly enough, new knowledge does not appear to enter our world on a constant regular basis. I think most of us would agree that within the past two hundred years, and certainly within the past century, new knowledge has absolutely poured in, especially on the technological and scientific fronts.

An increasing number of people have been given access to higher education, allowing the tuning of many minds to many different frequencies – Influx of new knowledge? However, it would appear – through study of various ancient records – that much knowledge that was once available, and understood, has also been forgotten.

We live in a troubled world, indeed some would say that the planet we live on has always been troubled – By Human Nature – The Law of Self.

It would therefore not be unreasonable to assume (always a little dangerous to assume anything) that time also transmits information on certain frequencies that it would be better for the Mind not to receive. Unfortunately, mankind often chooses these frequencies as the carnal mind (receiver) appears to be very receptive to them.

What is it about time that allows faith to be such a powerful force in a person’s life?

Can we start by asking in what direction time is moving?

Many believe time moves in a somewhat linear direction – from past, to present, to future.

The words Present (PRE-SENT) and Time (EMIT) would indicate otherwise.
An often heard expression -”I wonder what tomorrow will bring” – would also indicate otherwise.

What if time is actually moving towards us? It would certainly put a different perspective on things, not the least of which is faith.

What if our experience during our life here on earth TUNES the MIND (not the physical brain) to a particular frequency or set of frequencies?
For this purpose time, must needs be, EMITTING on a vast number of wavelengths on varying frequencies – continually.

The vast amount of information contained within these various wavelengths (carrier waves) are accessible, but dependant upon the individuals personal reception frequency.

A simple example would be a radio – We tune it in to a chosen frequency dependant upon the frequency of the carrier-wave a particular station we are interested in is broadcasting on. There are a vast number of other stations broadcasting at the same time but we do not access the information they are transmitting while on our chosen frequency. It doesn’t mean that they are not there, just that we do not have access to them at a particular moment when tuned in to the frequency of the station we are interested in hearing. Indeed, if we never”tune-in” to any other station then we will never have access to information other than that transmitted by our chosen station.

The radio also gives us a reasonably simple example of our definition of faith.
We faithfully switch on our radio at a certain time in the expectation of receiving a program we hope will be broadcast – at least according to the schedule. When we actually receive the program (signal) we have the evidence of things unseen (actually unheard in this example, but you see what I mean?).

Ephesians 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

‘Prince of the power of the air’ is the major clue if you think about what is transmitted through the air on our physical world.

The carnal human mind appears to be naturally ‘in-tune’ from an early age to the frequencies of this ‘prince’.

2 Corinth.4:4 ‘In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them’.

For the physical (visible) universe to exist there must be a spiritual (invisible) counterpart; for the laws of Duality (there are many of them) that exist in our physical world – for example: Up/Down, Long/Short, Wet/Dry, Light/Darkness, Good/Evil etc. – all need a THIRD FORCE. Duality is essentially static; to allow movement (Dynamic) from one extreme to another or somewhere in-between requires TIME – Itself invisible, although its effects are extremely visible.

I think that is enough Christopher, this is a subject that needs more than a blog comment to investigate. I hope this comment has been of some assistance to you.

  2. I am afraid this reply is a little late in coming Christopher. It is a little lengthy and not exhaustive, but I hope not confusing – if it is then it should be disregarded or perhaps discarded would be the correct word to use?

A major problem much of mankind appears to be struggling with is that of being able to distinguish between the Holy Spirit and other strange ‘spirits’.
The purely carnal mind appears to be more ‘in tune’ with (receptive to) other less benign frequencies. Strange as it may appear, according to Scripture, the carnal mind of man was designed to be so (Romans 8:7; 8)
    Reality.

Have we been deceived into believing that the world of flesh is real?
If, through the WORD (‘rhema’), the Sons of God are the true creators of reality, then was it our belief in Satan’s lies that caused us to create a World of his design?
Instead of producing the reality of God’s Design, we turned from that to produce a world which Satan designed.

The human form is consciousness that walks this planet over the period of a life span. It is the union of the intangible ‘consciousness’ with the tangible ‘form’. This consciousness generates an identity for the form and of the form.

We are coming toward the end of Pisces, the fish (two), an age which Jesus inaugurated by “fishing for the elect.” (Math.4:19). Not everyone is being ‘called’ now (or has been in the past) – according to Scripture.

All of us are affected by outside influences, be they on the physical or invisible plane. However, it is the influences from outside ourselves that appear to enable an understanding of things both physical and spiritual.

It may be of interest to briefly discuss one unseen product of technological development that has benefited many (but not all) peoples on this planet – EL-ECTRICITY – a coincidence that it was given this name? Not if we can use it as an analogy – a comparison between its properties and the unseen influences that can either inspire the mind (for good or the not so good) or depress and dispirit the mind. Mental health problems appear to be rapidly increasing in many so-called advanced societies!

    What is El-ectricity?

No one can give an explanation of what electricity actually is – a definition – the best we can achieve is: ‘a form of energy (power source) resulting from the existence of charged particles (such as electrons or protons), either statically as an accumulation of charge or dynamically as a current. We can not SEE electricity but we can see, feel and hear the effects of its usage in many different fields of application. This form of energy has always, potentially, been available to mankind, but it is only historically (known history) relatively recently that the means to do so were developed.
We can explain how it is produced – often called generation, but perhaps the word ‘harnessed’ would be more appropriate? We can also explain and see how electricity is stored, distributed and used.

A form of invisible energy that has the POTENTIAL to work wonders in the visible world. However, this unseen energy requires massive investment in physical (visible) equipment to enable it to be harnessed, distributed and used. Not only must we have equipment but it needs to be correctly dimensioned and produced from certain materials (conductors) that allow the efficient flow of this energy, along with materials that prevent the energy from returning to its source. Unfortunately, this energy is not easily held captive in the physical world – it is continually seeking the easiest and quickest way back to its source – in this case EARTH.
The whole electrical network from harnessing to the final end use has to be heavily INSULATED. In other words, to enable electricity to do work efficiently the visible components of the entire system need to be shielded from outside influences (attractions)

Eph.6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Certain physical materials (conductive) are very receptive to this invisible energy and will accept and transmit its potential over short or long distances. Certain other types of physical materials (insulators) will not accept, but will reject (resist) its acceptance and transmission. Yet other types of physical materials are somewhere in between – it takes a little longer and requires increased input to achieve flow.

    Semi-Conductors

A pure semi-conductor is a poor electrical conductor. However, they have a number of unique properties, one of which is the ability to change their conductivity by the ‘addition of impurities’ or by interaction with another phenomenon, such as an electric field or light.
The advent of the semi-conductor really revolutionized the EL-ECTRONICS industry. Semiconductors made it possible to miniaturize electronic components. Not only does miniaturization mean that the components take up less space, it also means that they operate faster and require less energy. I am writing this posting with the aid of a computer – just one example of their use. The creation of the computer itself may have something to teach us about our own creation – but we will not investigate that here.

    Water

Pure water is a non-electrolyte (non conductor of electricity) due to absence of mobile ions. However, if for example salt (added impurity) is mixed with the pure water, it will become an electrolyte and a conductor of electricity due to the presence of mobile ions.

We could perhaps liken a physical material’s acceptance (or not) of electrical energy to the invisible spiritual energy that can also POTENTIALLY create the seeds of understanding and development in mankind – we as individuals also exhibit varying degrees of resistance and many people are excellent insulators.

Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.

Luke 4:23 And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.

Luke 4:32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.

Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

Perhaps impurity of the heart (mind) is that which attracts the spirit – the physician is able to cure him/her self? The resistance (influence of worldly attractions) of the individual mind may govern the degree of conductivity? The frequency the mind is operating on at any given moment would also appear to govern the type of spirit that is attracted.
The evangelical preacher (not all of course) appears to be a good example of resistance and frequency combined – we have all seen or heard the ‘spirit’(?) induced ranting of the red hot preacher on a red hot frequency – hot under the collar and with an audience in wild ecstasy – ‘hallelujah’, ‘born again’(?), speaking in tongues(?) and saving souls(?) – All fired up!
Just like the high resistance electrical appliance designed to overheat – radiant heat. It burns if you get too close.

    Sound, Energy and The Word

The ‘Word,’ could be a symbol which represents all the cyclic energies which are expressing God’s spoken thought, design, and order. All ‘life’ energies come from a common source, but they vary in frequency (many) and strength (amplitude); they’re all expressions of God’s energy at different frequencies depending on what He wishes to say. That makes each of us, in effect, a ‘Word’. Our purpose is perhaps to express (in different forms) what He wishes to say and what He wishes us to do to enhance our spiritual development. If we focus too much of our life on worldly matters (lower frequencies), then we are not a clear channel for 2-way communication. It is therefore apparent that more than a single frequency is required if all forms of expression are to be utilized.

Heb. 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds (ages or aeon) were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear

‘Framed’: Strong’s G2675 – katartizō – to render, i.e. to fit, sound, complete.
Including the creation of the single parts and the harmonious organization of the whole, and the continual providence which maintains the whole throughout all ages.
‘Word of God’ – not here, the personal word (Greek, “logos,” John 1:1 ) but the spoken word (Greek, “rhema”); though by the instrumentality of the personal word.

    Regards

    John
