This brief series on love is, arguably, the most significant series this blog has ever embarked upon. Many times, I have harped on the necessity of Faith and what has been said stills holds true, for one cannot attain salvation and look forward to everlasting life in God’s presence after one’s journey in this life on earth is finished without faith. Love is the necessary application of such faith. Without it, one’s faith is null. Love is God and no one can love except one who knows God intimately. That is an undeniable Biblical fact. Therefore, I submit that the one who loves, whether he or she consciously claims Christ as Savior, is closer to the Kingdom of Heaven than one who sits in church on any given Sunday and knows no and shows no love. And, by that I mean loves everyone. That is a bold statement, I know and I am sorry to even have to say it, but then, I didn’t invent the thought. I read it in 1 John.
” God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God and God abides in him.” (1 John 4:16b ESV)
God is love. If you perform miracles, prophesy, go to church, and say all the “right” words and do all the “right” things (and only those things) that’s all well and good in a legalistic sort of way, but if there is no love in your heart, your faith is moot. (c.f. James 2:14).
What does love look like, then? What is love? Once again, we need only look to Scripture for the answer so you don’t need to take my word for it.
“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.”(1 Corinthians 13:4-8 ESV)
What more can I say other than to submit that any person who qenuinely demonstrates those heartfelt qualities written in 1 Corinthians is near to the Kingdom of Heaven. Conversely, anyone, no matter what he or she confesses or has confessed by mouth, who does not exemplify these same qualities from their heart is far from the Kingdom. Period.
As always, feel free to leave comments and questions. And do share this post and any others you wish.
